Summer is in full swing, and our reservation line is heating up. It happens this time every year as excited families decide this is the year they’re going to plan a vacation that includes some truly luxurious accommodations. July is an especially good month to plan your Big Bear getaway. Independence Day is one of our busiest holidays. The fireworks display in Big Bear the biggest Fourth of July fireworks display in Southern California. It’s especially fun, because the fireworks are launched from a barge on Big Bear Lake. The display in the sky is magnified by the reflections of the water. It’s truly an amazing show, and one you need to put on your bucket list.

Enjoy a fun night at the theater with The Big Bear Theater Project’s 80th anniversary presentation of Thornton Wilder’s “Our Town.” You’ll enjoy a nostalgic trip to Grover’s Corners, and enjoy an evening with its colorful residents. July 14th marks the opening of the annual Renaissance Faire in Fawnskin. It runs weekends through August 12th. This is one of our absolute favorite events, and a delightful time for everyone. This year they’re offering themed weekends. Fantasy Weekend is July 21-22, and you can expect to see fairies and all manner of mythical forest creatures. July 28-29 is Pirates Weekend, and you arrrrrrrr sure to have a Jolly Roger of a time. August 4th and 5th is Steampunk Weekend, and every goggle-wearing time-traveling Victorian is sure to enjoy some fun. The fun closes out on August 11th and 12th with Royal Weekend. This celebration of the faire’s royalty will include a sumptuous banquet fit for a queen, and you can join her for some turkey legs that are literally bigger than your head. Plan a Quick Midweek Summer Getaway

Most families like to plan a big summer vacation. The kids are out of school, and you’ve likely already had some conversations about it. But maybe your schedules are still too packed for a vacation lasting a full week or longer. If that’s the case, you can take advantage of our lower weekday rates and plan a quick midweek summer getaway.

Our busiest rental times are usually on the weekends, and many of our properties are priced accordingly. A midweek getaway can offer a greater value for your vacation dollars with the added benefit of lighter crowds at some of the more popular activities Big Bear has to offer. July is an especially busy month with lots of opportunities to enjoy dancing, dining, cycling and singing.

For your dancing fun, head over to Wyatt’s at The Big Bear Convention Center every Wednesday for free line dancing lessons and some foot stompin good fun. A plethora of dining options await you in The Village. Pick any one of the fine restaurants there as you stroll among the shop filled with unique gifts and amazing crafts. You’ll enjoy the smaller crowds during your midweek visit. The cyclists can keep active all month long by joining with the Big Bear Cycling Association for one of their many scheduled rides during July. Check out their website for times and places. And lastly, our favorite venue for top notch bands we just love to sing along with is The Cave. They’ve got a great lineup scheduled for July including a special appearance by Ted Nugent. Plan a Great July 4th in Big Bear

The 4th of July is always a pretty big deal around here. Many families kick off their summer vacations with this holiday, and those heading to Big Bear for the holiday always enjoy a special treat. The fireworks display is the largest one in all of Southern California. The fireworks are fired from a barge on Big Bear Lake, and visible from many shoreside properties and parks, but are even more spectacular from a boat on the lake. It’s a truly memorable event, and one that many families repeat every year.

The fourth falls in the middle of the week this year, so it’s a great opportunity for many families to plan a vacation to include the weekends before and after. And there’s plenty to keep you busy during your stay for the full week. Here’s a sample of the events that week:

July starts with a full slate of cycling events sponsored by the Big Bear Cycling Association. The events continue all month long with rides scheduled for all age and skill levels. Rock and roll fans have a special treat on July 2 when Ted Nugent appears at The Cave. Head over to Meadow Park on the morning of fourth for the 1st Annual Big Bear 4th of July Fun Run. Kick off the holiday with a fun run at Meadow Park, a great place on the lake to reserve your spot for the evening fireworks!

The Convention Center will be hosting a July 4th Independence Day Fair. You’ll enjoy fun games, old fashion contests, vendor booths, and some great food as well.

And if you don’t feel like cooking up your own feast, head over to the Marian Resort on Big Bear Blvd for the Annual Rotary Club Big Bear Lake Fourth Of July BBQ. This is also a great spot to view the fireworks. They’ll have booths set up with games, live music, and lots of other fun activities. Be sure to pack your lawn chairs and some blankets, so you can enjoy the fireworks in comfort later. Off Season Fun in Nuevo Vallarta

Summer vacations are starting for some, and it’s a time many families start getting serious about their summer vacation plans. There are lots of great options, and this week we’re exploring Villa la Estancia, our beachside resort in Nuevo Vallarta, Mexico.

Some of the things you can expect from a June or July visit to Nuevo Vallarta include quite a few plusses. The crowds from early spring have mostly thinned out, but the airlines still offer a good selection of flights out of Southern California airports with some direct flights available. The weather starts to include more rainy days through June and July, but many people find the rain to be a fun addition as the storms can be dramatic to watch roll in from the balcony of your beach-side condo. And enjoying a luxury condo overlooking the beach during a rainstorm is one of life’s more romantic experiences.

The shopping in nearby Puerto Vallarta remains a great way to spend afternoons with shops offering a wide selection of artwork from local craftsmen, amazing seafood, and lots of fun small shops filled with all manner of souvenirs, baked goods, and household items.

Chocolate lovers will want to make the pilgrimage to Choco Museo. This celebration of all things chocolate includes workshops showing how chocolate is made, hands-on classes to learn how to make various chocolate confections, and an actual chocolate museum. Be sure you set aside enough time to take it all in, and remember that they also are giving away free samples.  It’s hard to imagine anything more perfect than free chocolate. Be sure to put this stop on your itinerary.

But come nighttime, Puerto Vallarta rolls out some of the most original bars and venues you’re likely to find anywhere. Bar La Playa is right near the beach and a consistent crowd favorite with its handcrafted drinks featuring top shelf tequilas and mezcales.  Tell them what you like, and their cocktail artisans will create a personalized drink tailor made for your palate.  Are you in the mood for a nice Cuban cigar after dinner? Visit La Casa del Habano where you’ll find an amazing selection of Cuban cigars along with some true experts to help you choose among them. They have a walk-in humidor, and plenty of Cuban cigars available to sample before you buy. Relax with the owners, and come away with some fine cigars when you’re done. The Incanto combines a cabaret theater with an intimate piano bar to provide some of Puerto Vallarta’s best musical entertainment and delicious food from their cafe.
