For us city dwellers, an early morning walk in the chilly air amongst the trees and mountains in Big Bear is a rare treat. And for the skiers, the treat is even greater when it’s followed by a run down the slopes at Bear Mountain or Snow Summit.
Off the slopes, there’s still plenty of fun winter activity. One of our favorites is the Alpine Slide. Their new Mineshaft Coaster brings a coaster experience to Big Bear with hairpin turns, tunnels and 360 degree corkscrews. The coaster will take you down a mile-long track through the trees. They have their own snow making equipment on site, so as long as the weather is cold enough, you can also enjoy their snow play options with inner tube downhill runs, and their signature Alpine Slide where you can recreate a luge experience as you race down the mountain on the specially designed track and sleds.

Plan a Desert Getaway

We know Southern California never really gets extremely cold. But for many of us natives, those mornings when the temps dip below 50 can cause us to shiver a bit. We understand all the Minnesota transplants laugh at such folly, but reality is what we make of it. When we’re not specifically seeking out cold weather for skiing, we prefer to keep warm.
And that leads us to the great delight we have in our Southern California winters to spend more time on the golf course or relaxing by the pool at one of our La Quinta luxury properties.
Located a short drive from Palm Springs, La Quinta offers some great options for a winter getaway with weather that will keep you enjoying the outdoors. The golfers in your group will be thrilled with their options. There are 24 courses in La Quinta with another 76 within 20 miles. It may well be the center of the golfing universe with more options for golfers than any place else. Dozens of the courses are public or municipal courses with no membership required.
A short drive away is the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway. The ten minute trip takes you over the cliffs of Chino Canyon in a rotating gondola giving you amazing 360 degree views. It’s a great adventure up a 2.5 cable ride to the pristine wonder of Mt. San Jacinto State Park at the 8500 foot elevation where you’ll find restaurants, a gift shop, observation decks, a natural history museum, and over 50 miles of hiking trails.
Military aircraft buffs will want to plan a trip to the Palm Springs Air Museum. While most exhibits are temporarily closed, the museum is still offering their hugely popular Warbird Ride program that lets you book a seat for a thrilling ride in a historic warbird. Their retail store remains open as well with many items and displays you can buy to take home with you. And if you plan your visit accordingly, you can get reservations for the F-117 Experience where you’ll get a once in a lifetime opportunity to get up close to view this amazing aircraft with your visit led by former pilots and engineers behind the development of the program.

Plan a November Golf Getaway to La Quinta

This time of year we start seeing an increase in activity with our Big Bear cabins. This usually coincides with the first real snowfall of the season. But we don’t want to neglect our guests who enjoy some of the other great activities available in Southern California, so we’re highlighting this week some great options to plan a November Golf getaway to La Quinta.
November usually offers perfect weather for golfing with lows in the 50s, highs in the 70s, and virtually no rain days. Couple this with La Quinta’s collection of truly world-class golf courses and you’re set for a golf getaway that will be everything you want. And we’re ready with some amazingly luxurious options to help enhance your stay.
While we always hesitate to favor any of our properties over any other, we have to admit that PGA107 always has us smiling with a bit more spring in our step. We’re not sure if it’s the deck for our morning coffee off the private upstairs bedroom overlooking the small adjacent lake, the seating areas in the open courtyard, or the arched doorways and windows that remind us of something from old Hollywood. But whatever it is, we really love this place, and we’re sure you’ll feel the same. It’s spread out over 4600 square feet and with 5 bedrooms and 5 baths. When you’re not out on one of the nearby golf courses, you can relax in your own private salt water pool and spa with the soothing sounds of their waterfall in the background. PGA122 is another of our desert gems, and it’s located on the 6th fairway of the PGA West Weiskopf Private Course. There are built in TVs throughout the house with Travertine flooring and dark Italian granite in the kitchen. There’s plenty of outdoor seating to take in the mountain and fairway views when you’re not enjoying the Pebble Tech pool and spa with their adjacent waterfall.
